The meandering Shenandoah River runs a short distance from Charles Town’s eastern boundary. The Bloomery stretch of the Shenandoah River close to Route 115 offers deep waters with great catfish and bass fishing. Popular activities on the river include tubing, kayaking, and canoeing. Charles Town is home to the Jefferson County Museum, which features fascinating exhibits on the nation’s history. The downtown area is anchored by Jefferson County Courthouse, a picturesque Georgian building originally constructed in 1806 then rebuilt in 1836. Mountain Heritage Arts & Crafts Festival takes place each year at Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Around 200 artisans and craft makers participate in the festival’s juried arts and crafts shows. There are also demonstrations, drinks provided by local wineries and craft breweries, and live bluegrass music on Saturday and Sunday. Charles Washington’s historic Happy Retreat estate features Washington’s grand Federal and Greek Revival-style home built in the 19th century.
