Urbana Indoor Art & Craft Show takes place at Urbana Fire Hall in October. This event features more than 70 artists and craft makers showcasing a wide variety of original artworks and handicrafts. Sugarloaf Mountain is a short drive to Urbana’s southeast. Hiking trails ascend through the oak tree forest covering Sugarloaf Mountain, offering spectacular views over the surrounding scenery. Monocacy National Battlefield was the site of a pivotal battle between Confederacy and Federal troops in 1864. The battle is known as The Battle That Saved Washington as it saw outnumbered Federal troops successfully defend against one of the last forays of the Confederacy into Union territory. Six trails wind through Monocacy’s 1,647 acres of farm fields and pastoral scenery. There are monuments to those who fought in the battle in the historic slave plantation L’Hermitage at Best Farm. The city has numerous trails and parks. 95-acre Urbana District Park features football, lacrosse, little league, and soccer fields. The park also has sand volleyball courts, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and a 9/11 Veteran Memorial. The Villages of Urbana Pool & Recreation Center offers swimming pools, tennis courts, and other recreational amenities.
